Fern Boan, 91 of Independence died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1988. She was born Aug 4, 1896 in Barnett the daughter of James Edward and Mattie Ann Boan.
Miss Boan graduated from the Barnett Institute in 1914 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg and a Masters degree and Ph.D in sociology from the Chicago University School of
Social Services. She served as professor of sociology at the University of Oklahoma at Norman and for many years was supervisor of family services in Independence.
Although she was active in several Christian churches, she retained her membership at the Hopewell Christian Church near Barnett. She was a member of the Barnett Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Lamda, AASW, AARP
and three historical organizations in Morgan County.
Survivors include a brother, Athol Boan of Fredericksburg, Tex.; and several nieces and nephews. Another brother, Earl Boan preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home in Eldon with the Rev. Ron Crooks officiating. Burial will be in the Eldon Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday.
