Leona Castle Wilson Bruening
Leona Wilson Bruening was born September 29, 1911 in Emporia, Kansas to Amelia Ida and Theodore Castle. She passed away March 3, 2002 in the Great Plains Medical Center, Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of 90 years 5 months and 4 days.
Leona's mother passed away in 1918 and at the age of 13 she moved to the Rhea community where she lived with her aunt, Minnie Beckwith. Leona attended Rhea and Crawford Schools. She married Raymond Edward "Bill" Wilson on April 29, 1927(sic) in Cheyenne, Oklahoma. She attended Nursing School at Burns Flat and continued working in Home Health Care Until her retirement in the early 1980's. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was married to Edward Joseph Bruening at Wheeler, Texas on October 13, 1980 and they made their home in Elk City. Leona was an avid gardner and loving for people to come over and see her flowers. She was a member of the Elk City United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 3 sisters, 3 brothers, and her son-in-law, Donald Reynolds.
Services were held Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at Whinery-Savage Chapel, officiated by Terry Beals. Burial was held at the Silent Home Cemetery, Roll, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma under the direction of Whinery-Savage Funeral Service, Elk City.
Survivors include: Husband, Edward J. Bruening of the home; one daughter, Billie Darlene Reynolds of Amarillo, TX; one son, Eddie Wilson and wife, Lois of Crawford, OK; one brother, Ted Castle of Crawford, OK; three step sons, Melvin Bruening of Decorah, IA., Dale Bruening of Cedar Rapdis, IA., and Darrell Bruening of Decorah, IA.; five grandchildren, Alexia, Larry, Ricky, Becky, and Vickie; nine great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; a host of relatives and friends.
