Martha Cooley Bowen was the daughter of William Truitt and Margaret Crockett Cooley of the Big Bottom, Humphreys County, Tennessee. She and her husband lost their only son in the Civil War, but she and her husband took in the orphaned son, Samuel A. Larkins, Jr., of Berry's sister, Naomi Bowen Larkins, and then later took in the orphaned children of her sister, Paralee Cooley Young.
In their will, Margaret and Berry left their church their farm land in Big Bottom to be used for upkeep to the church and needs of the minister. The church, The Bowen's Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church, was named in their honor. The church installed stain glass windows with their likenesses in the church.
THE DEATH DATE ON HER STONE IS WRONG. THE ADMINISTRATOR FOR HER ESTATE WAS APPOINTED 8 DECEMBER 1899. SHE IS ALSO BURIED NEXT TO HER SON AND NOT IN THE GRAVE BEARING HER MARKER.
