Mary's maiden name is uncertain, as is her year of birth. Some genealogies give her maiden name as Kirkum, but that is the maiden name of the wife of a William Witherspoon in North Carolina, not this one.

Mary married William in Ireland and immigrated to America with him and his family in 1790. Her daughter Elizabeth's family Bible records the following children born to William and Mary:
