Only surviving child of Sarah Elizabeth Cobb and Captain Benjamin Spooner Briggs, who were lost at sea aboard the Mary Celeste.

He had stayed with his maternal grandmother to attend school, rather than join the ill fated voyage of his parents and baby sister.

He was later a ward of a paternal Uncle and eventually married Margaret Hovey Holmes. It was eventually reported they had two sons born to them.

Per census records, Mr. Briggs was a commercial Bookkeeper for a Coal company and his wife, Margaret, was a public school teacher.
