Loyd Calder, nephew of J.D. Calder of this place, who grew to manhood in Republic and Big Bend, was killed by a Rock Island train at Scandia, Kansas, Monday morning. He had been out in Norton county (sic) visiting his sister, Mrs. Jewell Galusha, and returned on a (NOTE: typed as written in newspaper) that stops at the crossing but not at the depot in Scandia. He was told to get off at the crossing but it seems he hung to the guard of the car until he struck the platform, which threw him under the train. His skull was crushed and an arm and both legs broken. His father died several years ago, and his death at this date is very sad and greatly regretted. – Hardy (Hardy Herald)
