Harriet was the eldest daughter of Dr. Harry and Maria Stewart Conant. She was one of ten children, with four siblings dying in infancy. She was the first wife of James Armitage. They were married on August 15, 1842. In early womanhood, Harriet died after only two years of marriage, and James married her sister Helen later on. Other siblings were Mrs. Alpheus S. Williams, of Detroit, John S. Conant of Detroit, Mrs. James Armitage of Monroe, Mrs. John P. Hogarth of Monroe, and Harry A. Conant of Monroe, who was the U.S. Consul at Naples, Italy, and Ex-Secretary of State.
