Possibly the son of William Foster (1802-1845) and Elizabeth Tomlinson (1801-1863). Although, this Ancestry message shows a William Foster and Elizabeth Tomlinson having a son named Charles, also born in 1826, that died in the Crimea.

Charles obtained his naturalization papers in Aurora, IL on March 25, 1872.

CHARLES FOSTER DIES AT AGE OF 86

Charles Foster, a well known resident of the north side, died last night at 11:15 at his boarding house, the North Star hotel, 2122 George Street. The infirmities of old are attributed as the cause of death. He was 86 years of age. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of the son, Alfred Foster, 1603 Charles Street. Interment will take place in Oak Grove Cemetery.

The funeral of Charles Foster was held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the home of his son, Alfred Foster, 1608 Charles Street. Interment was made in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Foster was born August 27, 1826, in Sutton-on-the-Trent, England. He came to the United States in 1867, settling at Aurora, IL, where he worked for some time on the Burlington Road. Later he removed to Farnhamville, Iowa, settling on a farm where he remained for 25 years. Seven years ago he came to Lacrosse, where two of his sons, W.C. and Alfred Foster, were located. His wife died seven years ago.

Surviving are five sons, W.C. Foster and Alfred Foster of LaCrosse, G.B. Foster of Shabbona, IL, E.W. Foster of Lawn Hill, IA, and H.L. Foster of Greeley, CO.
