REEDSBURG - Harold A. Alwin, retired colonel, age 79, of Reedsburg, died on Monday, December 18, 2000, in the Sauk County Health Care Center. Harold, better known as Harry, was born and raised in Honey Creek Township, Sauk County, Wisconsin. As a boy he worked on dairy farms and attended high school at Prairie du Sac. In 1940, he entered military service with Company H of Baraboo, part of the 128th Infantry, 32nd Division. He served three-and-one-half years in the Pacific during World War II. On November 7, 1944, he married Mabel L. Schmidt at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Annerley, Brisbane, Australia. Upon discharge in 1946 he enrolled at UW-Platteville and attained a B.S. degree in a record time of two years and eight months. He taught at Mineral Point, Reedsburg, Appleton and Wisconsin Rapids. He later established a real estate and finance business in Reedsburg, which he operated for 20 years. Previously he had rejoined the National Guard and continued to serve for a total of 32 years. He had a variety of assignments, including company commander, battalion operations officer, battle group executive officer, battalion commander of the 105th Cavalry, battalion commander of the maintenance battalion, and inspector general of the 32nd Division. His final assignment was as training evaluator for the 5th Army commander at the rank of full colonel. Col. Alwin was a graduate of the Army Command, and General Staff College. He was also very civic-minded, having served as alderman to the city of Reedsburg, president of St. John's congregation, longtime quartermaster of the VFW and commander of the VFW. He was also vice chairman of Madison Area Technical College for five years and a trustee of Sauk County Normal School. His military service earned him nine ribbons, including the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star for action in the Philippines, ; and the occupation of Japan. Survivors include his wife Mabel; three children Marshall (Rebecca) Alwin of Middleton, Bevan (Lola) Alwin of Houston, Texas, and Sharon (Judd) Knott of Hudson; seven grandchildren, Nathan, Scott, Joanna, Christopher, Cassandra, Zachary and Katherine; other relatives and mends. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 22, 2000, at ST. JOHN EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH in Reedsburg. with Dr. James Steinbrecher officiating. Internment with military rites will follow in St. John's Cemetery. The family will receive friends from - 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 21, 2000 at HOOF FUNERAL HOME in Reedsburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the VFW building fund or the St John building fund would be appreciated.
