Catherine Elizabeth Anderson, 51, of Austin, TX, formerly of Peru, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday, October 1, 2012 in Austin.
A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 5:30 PM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in LaSalle with Fr. Mark Geisler celebrant, Joe Harzheim vocalist and Paula Atkinson accompanist. An open house reception will follow the service. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM until the time of services on Thursday, October 18 at the church. Arrangements are entrusted to the Mueller Funeral Home in Peru.
Catherine was born on November 16, 1960 in Spring Valley to the late Donald B. Anderson and Nancy Anderson. She was a graduate of St. Bede Academy, 1978; Illinois Valley Community College, 1980 where she was inducted into the Hall of Fame; Illinois State University, BFA; University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, MFA; University of Delaware/Winterthur Museum and was most recently a fellow at Ball State University in Historic Preservation.
Catherine's passion for historic preservation was evident in her career spanning: the Spring Grove-Painting Conservation Apprentice; the Pomeranz Institute of Fine Art Conservation, Chicago; Graphic Conservation Company, Chicago; Shelburne Historic Village, Vermont; Biltmore House, North Carolina; Art Conservation and Technical Services, Maryland; Smithsonian National Museum of American History, Washington, D.C., National Fellowship; Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum, Boston; Field Museum, Chicago; Conservator/Supervisor, Preventative Conservation, Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia and the Miami County Museum, Cole Porter Exhibition, Peru, Indiana.
Throughout her career, Catherine traveled and lectured in the United States and Europe. She received the highest honor in New Zealand by the tribal leaders for her reconstruction of the Ruatepuke exhibit, a sacred tribal ancestral house she oversaw while serving as the Objects Conservator and Maori Meeting House Conservator for the Field Museum in Chicago.
With her philanthropic spirit, when Hurricane Katrina devastated the south, Catherine was selected from among a large group of volunteers by the American Institute of Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works to assist with the area museums. She was there not only during Katrina, but when Hurricane Rita struck, working on St. Bernard and surveying the ninth ward as well as the parishes east and west assessing the damage reeked upon the smaller museums. Catherine worked in tandem with FEMA in follow up aid and assistance.
Catherine has served in numerous recovery efforts concerning the arts and conservation including: Hurricane Floyd in Jamestown, Hurricane Isabel on the east coast, the Chicago Historical Society flood and the Des Plaines River flooding.
Catherine is survived by her mother, Nancy Anderson of Peru; sisters, Philae (Steven Mignone) Amenti of Austin, Texas, Judi (Stephen) Shortridge of Wasilla, Alaska, Valery (Robert) Calvetti of Ottawa and Barbara Anderson and Sarah (Joseph Harzheim) Anderson both of Peru; brother Benet (Jeanette) Anderson of Peru; nephews and nieces, Evan Anderson-Ebener of Austin, Texas, Jason Anderson-Ebener of Austin, Texas, Caitlin (Grant) Pomasel of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Ian Shortridge of Wasilla, Alaska and Emily Anderson, Katherine Kaszynski and Ellen Anderson all of Peru and her lifelong friend Lori (Keith) Halliday of Bloomington.
She was preceded in death by her father, Donald B. Anderson.
