On October 1, 1857, Mr. (Stephen H.) Wilkins married Miss Margaret Buchanan, who was born in Indiana & is the daughter of Samuel & Sarah J. (Toller) Buchanan, the former born in Pennsylvannia ((my family history says NOT Pennsylvania but rather South Carolina as noted under Wesley A. Buchanan's page history)) & the later in Indiana. Of their family of 6 children 2 are now living. ((only Margaret was ever shown)). Mr. Buchanan removed from Indiana ((missing: married 1832 Terrehaute, Ind)) to Jasper County, Illinois, & in 1855 came to Wapello County, where he & his wife both passed away.

Samuel ((b: York Co.,)) S. Carolina. ((M: 1832 Terrehaute, Ind. to Sarah Jane TOLLER.)) At young age he was brought to Indiana where he was reared and schooled. Before reaching his majority ((manhood)) he commenced trading with the ((Pottawattomie)) Indians in Indiana, and bartered with the Pottawattomie's for some time, which he found a very lucrative business. He was married there and settled on a farm which he cultivated until he came later to Wapello County, Iowa, in 1855. ((with Sarah his wife & young children)) He located in Cass Township, where he rented a farm & coal bank, which he operated about 6 yrs (1861).
((Civil War: Just after his son Wesley A. was born Jan. 6, 1862, Samuel enlisted in 15th IA reg't, Co. D, on Feb 1, 1862 along with his son George W.ashington Buchanan, & his future son-in-law Stephen Harry Wilkins (married his dau. Margaret "Maggy"). He was wounded @ battle of Shiloh & discharged June 17, 1862. He returned back home to IA. ))
He rented land until 1871, when he moved to Keokuk township, IA & purchased 160 acres of land(s) - 80 acres of the Mathews heirs & the remaining 80 of the Litchfields. This property he farmed until his death on Jan. 18, 1898, at the age of eighty-eight years. He was very successful in business, & during his many years' residence here made many warm friends. Her married Sarah Tol(l)er, by whom he had 5 children, as follows: Nancy J. ; George W.; Margaret; Sarah A.; and Amanda ((Maddy)). After the death of his first wife he married Lucinda SHAW, by whom he also had 5 children: Wesley A.; Ella; Martha; Cordie May ((married Mr. Shank)); and Amiee ((Amy Cloretta, married Mr. (Nimrod?) Poston - census taker)). In religious belief he was a Methodist. In Politics he was a Republican ((which by modern terms follows the current principles of the Democratic party -stood against corporations & for the common man & against slavery)), & was honored with several township offices.
Wesley A. Buchanan attended the common schools of Keokuk township, & has always lived on the old home farm. Since his father's demise he has had entire charge of the farm, & is doing well. He is a very progressive man & a prosperous future is predicted by those who are familiar with his qualifications, & his honest & upright methods of doing business. He is unmarried, & his devoted mother keeps house for him. In politics he is a firm supporter of the principles advocated by the Republican party. Fraternally he is a member of the Modern Woodsmen of America.
