Below information from various articles from the "Hutchinson Leader" collected in the military collection at MCHS paraphrased
Kenneth went to rural school and had four siblings
Madeline (later Mrs Steve McCormick)
Nettie
Edna
Marvin (later a fighting Seabea in WW II)
He joined Co B "Red Bull" of the National Guard in 1940 just two months before it was mobilized for overseas.
His parents, M/M Eugene Bonniwell, had been notified by the State department their son was missing in action. Over a year later, they received a letter from the Company Chaplain stating in part,
"S/Sgt Bonniwell was with his Company in an attack on a hill in Southern Italy. The Company was caught in a heavy mortar barrage from enemy guns and was forced to withdraw. When the men of the company were assembled a check was made, and it was found that S/Sgt. Bonniwell was missing. Accordingly, a report to that effect was forwarded to you by the War Department. Later investigation revealed that your son, Kenneth, had lost his life. Kenneth is buried in a military cemetery in Southern Italy. A Protestant Chaplain performed the rites at his grave."
