Roswell's biography states that he was born in Otselic in 1812. However, I have never found a birth record or any sign of his parents or other Bourne family members. Any hints would be appreciated.

Roswell was a student at Cazenovia in 1833. He married Maria Carpenter in 1836. Some genealogy sites give her name as Rosina Mariah, but she was always called Maria in newspaper articles, and in Roswell's will.

Roswell was a teacher and school commissioner in Chenango County. He lived for a time in Pitcher Springs, and probably also lived in Brackel shortly after marriage.

He became a well-known lawyer, and moved to Cincinnatus in about 1860.

Children were Helen Bourne Knickerbocker (who also went to Cazenovia, before marrying Henry), Roswell Walworth Bourne (who served in the 157th, was captured at Gettysburg and sent to the Belle Island prison camp, and later settled in Willet, NY), and Josephine Bourne Riddell (who moved to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, but later returned to the east coast, and was buried next to her parents).

Roswell died of cancer in 1866. In his will, he split his estate between his wife Maria, daughter Helen Knickerbocker, son R.Walworth, and daughter Josephine.

Roswell's estate included his house in Cincinnatus. He is buried almost in the back yard of his old house. Later, when his daughter Helen died, this became the Knickerbocker corner of the cemetery. There is a church about 200 yards farther back. The land for the church was donated by Edwin Knickerbocker. Real estate records suggest this land passed from Roswell to Maria to Helen, and then eventually to Helen's grandson Edwin.
