Sister Mara Gandia, age 75, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of
Christian Charity, died Sunday evening, Jan. 16, 2005, at Holy Famly
Convent, Manitowoc.
The former Anna Gandia was born June 13, 1929, in Kilauea, Kauai,
Hawaii, daughter of the late Pastor and Mary Ah Sui Lum Gandia. She
entered the convent in 1950 and professed her vows in 1952. Sister Mara
earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Holy Family College, Manitowoc.
Sister Mara served as an elementary teacher at St. John the Baptist,
Plymouth; Sacred Heart, Manitowoc; St. Bernadette, Appleton; Holy
Rosary, Kewaunee, all of Wisconsin; Cathedral, Honolulu; St. Theresa,
Kekaha, Kauai, both of Hawaii; and St. John Mission, Komatke, Ariz.
After retiring from active ministry, she performed various services at
Holy Family Convent and St. Francis Convent, Manitowoc. Since 2002, she
has been a resident of St. Rita Health Center at the Motherhouse. She is
a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.
Survivors include: The Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity; two
sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary Jane Gandia, Gardena, Calif.; Theresa
and Gene Shimamoto, Torrance, Calif.; two brothers and three
sisters-in-law: James and Maxine Gandia, Honolulu; Joseph and Mae
Gandia, Roselle, Ill.; and Mary Gandia, Kekaha, Kauai, Hawaii. Also
surviving are nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family will greet relatives and friends at Holy Family Convent,
Manitowoc, from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, where a prayer
service will be held at 7 p.m. at Holy Family Convent Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at
Holy Family Convent Chapel, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of
Christian Burial will be the Rev. Samuel D. Jadin, O. Praem with burial
at Holy Family Convent Cemetery, Manitowoc.
The Pfeffer Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc, is
assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
