ELMIRA BENGE DIES AT 90 YEARS

One of Oldest Native-Born Residents of Madison County

Elmira Benge, one of the oldest native born residents of Madison county, died Sunday, May 1, at the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines. She was 90 years of age and had been in failing health for several years.

Miss Benge was born in the pioneer Buffalo community, just south of Winterset, on Feb. 22, 1859, the daughter of Alfred and Margaret Banks Benge. She never married and spent her entire life in and near Winterset.

She spent a number of years acting as housekeeper for relatives, and she reared in her home the four orphaned children of a sister. They were Fred, Lilly, Rena and Fay Yoder.

At her death, her nearest surviving relatives were a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held here Tuesday from Anderson's home for funerals, in charge of the Rev. I. E. Linkletter, pastor of the Winterset Church of Christ. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
