Henning W. Swanson — Lake City

Henning William Swanson was born Dec. 1, 1915, on a farm in Adams. His parents, Thilda and Henry L. Swanson, were Swedish immigrants. He attended school in Adams and subsequently graduated from the University of Minnesota. In June of 1953, Henning married Ruth Evelyn Fredrickson in Santa Cruz, Calif.

He is survived by his wife Ruth, and three children; the Rev. Karen Swanson (the Rev. David Ota) and their son, Paul Michiya Ota of Foster City, Calif., Steven Swanson of New York, N.Y., and Scott Swanson (Rita Swanson) and their children, Andrew James and Sarah Elizabeth of Edina. In addition, he is survived by his nephew, Craig Swanson of Annandale. He was preceded in death by his son, Paul, his sister, Signe and brother, Carl.

Henning was drafted in 1940, trained in the Army Medical Corps, and was assigned to the Cavalry until World War II began on Dec. 1, 1941. He then served as a navigator for the 7th Air Force in the Pacific Theatre, where he was twice awarded the air medal.

His life's work was in agricultural economics and education. In 1951, he conducted a University of Minnesota research study on financing and economics for beginning farmers, resulting in a published agricultural extension bulletin on the findings. He taught in a number of Minnesota schools including Rushford, Owatonna, Faribault, and the St. Paul School of Agriculture, as well Wisconsin State College in River Falls, Wis.

Henning settled in Lake City with his family in 1960, where he was an adult agriculture teacher until his retirement. He believed strongly that the best guidance for the actual operation of a farm comes from those farmers that have been successful through sound decisions, hard work and common sense - regardless of formal education.

Henning enjoyed biking, skiing, canoeing, hiking, building fences, planting trees and anything associated with nature or farming. He was a member of the VFW, the Science Museum, the Lake Superior Hiking Trail, the Nature Conservancy and numerous other organizations with health and environmental concerns.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Mayo Medical Foundation, the Nature Conservancy or any other health or environmental organization.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday June 16, 2011, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Lake City. Visitation will begin at 10 am.
