Death Claims Gustav Hintz Highly Esteemed citizen of Edford Twp
The passing of Gustave R. Hintz, age 68 years __________ Church, came as a complete shock to relatives and friends. Mr. Hintz was apparently in good health until Thursday, when he became ill while at work in the cornfield and upon his return to the farm yard, suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, collapsing unconscious in the arms of his son. The family physician was summoned together with members of his family, every aid human hands could render was resorted to but he never regained consciousness. Death occurred at 2 o clock early in the morning of July 2, 1932, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hintz.
Mr. Hintz was born in Nicklusdorf, Germany, March 1, 1864 and came with his parents, brothers and sisters to the United States at the age of three years. They came directly to Edford township and established the home which has been his home his entire life. He was a successful farmer, never being too busy to lend a hand to a neighbor or friend or never neglecting his Christian duties. His ambitious characteristics together with hard work and honest dealings had enabled him to secure considerable land in Edford, which he shared with his sons. He was confirmed in St. Peter's church and married there to Miss Wilhelmina Pobanz on October 18, 1888. She preceded him in death November 5, 1920.
Deceased was an outstanding figure at St. Peter's church as Rev. Fleer said at the funeral service, "He was the pillar, the cornerstone and the steeple of the church," For many years he has been president of the board of trustees, giving not only advisory aid but liberal financial support. For many years he walked from his home to church to build fire so that the others might worship in comfort. He considered it his duty and was relied upon to ring the bell at the church for each service, which duty he preformed even the Sunday prior to his death at the funeral service of a departed friend. As the bell was being tolled while the remains of Mr. Hintz were borne from the church, the rope broke, the same instance occurring at the last sad rites of his wife. Unless illness, or an absolute necessity prevented him from attending church he sat in his pew every Sunday. He acted as an usher for many years, and was in charge of the Christmas tree at holiday time. He remembered all the children of the congregation, even those who were not present, and set aside bags of candy which were given them later. He gloried in the works of his family, his relatives, and friends, and above all the works of his beloved church. Rev. Fleer stated, "It will be hard to fill his place, if it ever can be filled."
He was a personal friend of Rev. Fleer, who with his family were taken into the hospitable Hintz home upon their first arrival in Henry County seventeen years ago. Mr. Hintz also served as a ember of the Edford school board. He leaves to mourn his passing, his sons and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William R. Hintz, of Geneseo; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hintz and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hintz, of Edford. Also two grandchildren, Norma and Howard Hintz and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Erdman and Mrs. Theresa Pobanz. Two sisters, Mrs. Caroline Newmann and Mrs. Augusta Pobanz and one brother, Frederick preceded him in death as did also his parents. A sister passed away in Germany before the family came to America. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Elmer Hintz home and at 3 at St Peter's Evangelical church, Rev. G.D. Fleer, of Kewanee, former pastor, officiating. The church was filled to capacity with relatives and friends who came to pay their last respects. The church choir rendered three musical numbers. The pallbearers were nephews of the deceased: Henry Pobanz, Theo. Pobanz, Henry and Ernest Neumann, John and Otto Erdman. Interment was in the Edford Cemetery. Among those from out of town who attended the services were: Paul Renner and sister Hattie, Mr. and Mrs. Gust. Pobanz, Mrs. Emeline Magerkurth, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Neumann of Moline, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hintz and daughter of Rock Island: Mrs. Theresa Meeske of Wyoming, ILL.; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Pobanz and children of Neponset: Mr. G.D.
