British Admiral. A graduate of the Britannia Royal Naval College, he was awarded the "Silver Sea Gallantry Medal" for his actions during the rescue of the ship “Dehli”. He was commander of a submarine during World War I, and distinguished himself sinking three German cruisers in the Baltic Sea. In 1932, he was appointed Rear Admiral. Between 1939 and 1940 he served as Commander the fleet of surveillance of North Atlantic and Commander of the Submarine Fleet. In 1941, he was appointed Admiral Commander of a fleet in defense of the seas around United Kingdom. According to historians of World War II, his strategy was decisive for the victory in Atlantic against the German submarines. During his long career he was awarded several prestigious british and foreign military and civilian awards, including the "Order of St. George", the "Légion d'honneur" and "Legion of Merit". In 1945, he resigned from the Royal Navy, and was elevated to the rank of Knight Grand Cross of the "Order of the Bath".
