In the 1850 census George (age 30) a Boatsman, and Sophia (age 21) are living in Fairfield County, Baltimore Township, Ohio with her mother, Catherine Gearhart, age 58 and her sons Jonas (age 20) a Boatsman, Abraham (age 13), George (age 3); also H.W. Mullenux (age 1) and Ellen (age 0).

In the 1860 census in Liberty Township, Baltimore Ohio, George (age 37) a Sawyer, Sophia (age 31), Ann (age 10), George (age 9), Medora (age 5), and John (age 1). By this point Sophia's brother Jonas (age 28) is married and a Day laborer, living with his wife Mary (age 26), daughters Margaret (age 3), Catherine (age 2) and Ann (age 1).

The 1870 census in June lists the family in Toledo Ohio, George is age 46 and a Tailor by profession, his wife Sophia is age 42 and they have seven children (the youngest at this time is Bertie born in April 1870, listed on the 1870 census as David).

"During the political campaign of 1880, George became a member of the 'Silver Gray Republican Club' a partisan organization serving senior citizens of Toledo. George and his immediate family remained in Toledo, George having become the master of the tug 'Wave' by no later than 1874. This marked the beginning of a fleet of tugs for George and his professional mainstay until his death on 22 April 1899.

Sophia GIERHART/GEARHARDT, was born to (unknown) GIERHART and Catherine (unknown) between 1826 and 1829[26], in Ohio. Sophia died on 1 Oct 1876, in Toledo, leaving behind husband George and 7 of her 11 children—4 of her children had died in childhood, and 5 were still legal minors at the time of her death, the youngest, Amelia, being just 4 years old at the time.
