When Christian was 4 years old, he emigrated with his parents, Frederick and Charlotte Ronn Bastian in 1854 from Wattsmanhagen Parish, Mecklenburg, Germany. On the ship's manifest his name is listed as "Chr."

Around 1875, Christian married Wilhelmine Fensen. They first lived in Bristol, Fillmore, Minnesota, but by 1905, he is living with Minnie, their daughter Carrie, 26, son Herman, 21, and grandson Harvey Luma, 5, in Milwaukee City, Ward 11, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. Christian is working as a tanner, Carrie is a dressmaker and Herman is working as a painter.

Christian is listed as "Fritz" in the 1900 census where he and Minnie or "Mina" are still living in Milwaukee with their sons August and Herman. In 1910, Christian is living with Minnie, Herman and his daughter Minnie and grandson Harvey, the latter two of which are now listed as having the last name "Siems." Minnie is listed as single in both the 1905 and 1910 federal censuses
