Prince, Lieutenant-General. In service since 1731, he took part in the Seven Years' War in 1761, was promoted to major-general, in 1765, received the rank of lieutenant-general, and later retired and moved to Moscow. Knight of the Order of St. Anne. Around 1767 he married Anne Vasil Suvorov (1744-1813), daughter of General-in-Chief and Senator Vasily Suvorov Feodosievny Manukova and Anne, the sister of Generalissimo Alexander Suvorov. In this marriage were born:
• Agrippina Ivanovna (1767-1843), in 1789 married to Count Dmitry Ivanovich Khvostov.
• Aleksey Ivanovich Gorchakov (1769-1817), General of Infantry, a former defense minister
• Andrei Ivanovich Gorchakov (2nd) (1776-1855), General of Infantry.
