Found in The State 24 September 1914: Caldwell Robertson, retired capitalist, 60 years of age, died yesterday at his home, 1403 Pendleton street, after an illness extending over several months. Mr. Robertson was educated for the bar and practiced law for a time in St. Louis, serving also at various periods a term as city councilman of Columbia and one as a member of the lower house of the general assembly from Richland county; but business absorbed his energies for the greater part of his career and he was for many years successfully active as a real estate operator. He retired from business and public life on the conclusion of his legislative term. John Caldwell Robertson was born in Columbia July 19, 1854. His father, Thomas J. Robertson, was a planter who served in the United States senate as a member for South Carolina from 1868 to 1877. His mother, Mary O. Robertson, who had extensive property interests in Columbia was one of the promoters of the South Carolina railroad. Mr. Robertson entered in 1868 the classical school in Columbia directed by Hugh S. Thompson, from which he went to the University of Virginia. After one term at Charlottesville he went to Georgetown college, from which he was graduated in due course with honors. Returning to South Carolina, he studied law in the office of the celebrated pleader, Col. Jas. H. Rion, at Winnsboro. He was admitted to the bar after examination by Gen. J. B. Kershaw, then a circuit judge. Mr. Robertson practiced law for some time in St. Louis. After his return to South Carolina, Mr. Robertson, subsequent to the election of 1876, was appointed by Gen. Wade Hampton to be a member of his staff as governor. Mr. Robertson was a member of city council for two years and for a like period had a seat in the lower house of the general assembly as a member from Richland county. One of his business ventures was the promotion of a cotton batting manufactory in Columbia. He was president of this company for several years. Mr. Robertson was married first to Miss Frances McCreery of Columbia. Surviving children of this marriage are Mrs. Margery Dial, wife of J. Donald Dial, Columbia, and Mrs. Olive Ansley, wife of Lewis M. Ansley. Mr. Dial is a real estate and insurance broker, residing at 1618 Pendleton street. Mr. Ansley, who is vice president of the Columbia Savings Bank and Trust company, lives at 2 Gibbes court. Mr. Robertson was married several years ago to Miss Jennie C. Love of Columbia, by who he is survived. Mr. Robertson leaves also one brother, Edwin W. Robertson, the Columbia banker and traction operator.
