Hazel was born September 24, 1910 in Egin, ID to John James and Lucy (Green) Strange. She grew up on a farm and mowed hay when she was only 10 years old. She married Duvay H. Sainsbury in 1929 and they lived on a dry farm in Teton, ID where the snow covered the fence posts and temperatures reached 30 - 50 degrees below zero every winter. In 1936 they moved to Buena, WA, shortly thereafter they relocated to Nyssa, OR. In 1940 they bought 80 acres in White Bluffs and 10 acres in Hanford. Next they moved to Saint Ignatius, MT, then back to Toppenish, WA - that's when they started training race horses. Next they moved to the Methow Valley on a ranch where they raised and trained their horses, along with raising some cattle. They moved to Chattaroy, WA and raced their horses in Spokane, Portland, Seattle, Phoenix, Chicago and California. When Hazel reached age 80 they had to slow down and sold their Deer Creek Ranch. They settled in Desert Aire where they enjoyed retirement. For the last 18 months Hazel has resided at the Moses Lake Senior Living Community in Moses Lake. She enjoyed these past months where she made many new friends. Family and staff and many old friends continued to look after her and made her comfortable. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many different positions. She is survived by her children, oldest son Theron and wife Marie Sainsbury of Moses Lake, WA, son Larry Sainsbury of Trout Creek, MT and daughter Darlene Coon of White Center, WA; and she is leaving a wonderful posterity of 13 dear grandchildren, 40 great-great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Duvay H. Sainsbury, her parents and all her 7 siblings.
