He was born February 17th 1897 the second of four children born to James Frye and Addie Desair.
His parents separated in the early 1900's and he lived with his mother and siblings in Rice Lake Wisconsin. His mother remarried in 1906 and he spend his youth in Rice Lake.
On June 13th 1917, at the age of 20, he married Dorothy Lantz in in Carlton County Wisconsin.
From this marriage sixteen children were born, 8 daughters and 8 sons. Wilmer worked in a sawmill.
He was a WWI veteran serving in the Headquarters Co 69th Field Artillery.
They lived in Carlton County for thirteen years before briefly moving to Wisconsin in 1930. The family settled in Doyle, Barron County WI, to work on a dairy farm, their son Douglas was born there, all the other children were born in Minnesota.
