Wing Commander Stewart was an RCAF pilot and the commanding officer (C/O) of 434 Squadron at 3 (F) Wing, Zweibrücken, Germany. He lost his life when 434 Squadron's North American F-86 Sabre (#23396) fighter jet aircraft crashed on the runway at Zweibrücken; Stewart had been checking the nose landing gear of another 434 Squadron Sabre (#23463) when his aircraft stalled, resulting in its crashing.

Wing Commander Herbert Collier Stewart is commemorated on Page 84 of the 'In the Service of Canada' Book of Remembrance.
W/C H. C. STEWART, AFC, is one of 107 airmen's names inscribed on the Honour Roll on the Sabre Pilots Memorial at RCAF Memorial Museum in Trenton, Ontario, Canada; the unveiling ceremony of the Sabre Pilots Memorial took place on 19 June 1998.
