Fred died at the Western Medical Center in Anaheim, Calif . on 28 January 1987. He was born on July 31, 1907 to Peter and Maria (Zitzer) Hartmann in Sheboygan, Wisc. Fred attended Trinity Lutheran School and was a member of the Church. Mr. Hartmann married Pearl Helmer of Oconto, Wisc. On August 18, 1928 at a ceremony which took place at the parsonage of his church. The Rev. Karl Schulz lead the service. Fred worked as a window trimmer in one of Sheboygan's department stores. In 1933 the couple moved to Battle Creek, Mich. where Fred worked as a department store manager. A few years later the couple moved to South Bend, Ind. Were Fred continued in the retail sales business. Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy in May 1943 and was discharged in January 1946 after attaining the rating of Petty Officer Third Class. Fred resumed his managerial work at J.C. Penney's after serving his country. Eventually, the couple opened Pearl's Bar and Grill in South Bend. It was a favorite among the Notre Dame University students. The couple retired from the restaurant business in 1971. After Pearl's death in 1978, Fred moved to Anaheim, Calif. to live with his daughter Nancy Lee and her husband. Fred was rejoined with his wife at the Riverview Cemetery in South Bend. Surviving are his daughter and three granddaughters
