Gregory B. Wisner died at the age of 27, cause of death on autopsy listed as accidental drowning; his body was found in the surf near Indian Rocks Beach.

The autopsy report noted that Gregory Wisner had a history of cocaine abuse, and toxicology results showed cocaine present in his system at time of death; the medical examiner wrote: "The decedent had tried to stop using cocaine and had mentioned "cleansing" himself to a close friend. Perhaps this is the reason for his visit to the ocean. The cocaine intoxication may have contributed to his drowning. The manner of death is accident."

He was survived by both parents: R. Michael Wisner and Helen Wisner.

His father R. Michael Wisner co-authored the book Living Healthy in a Toxic World (1996), which espouses using techniques developed by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard as a resource for drug detoxification. The book features an introduction by celebrity Scientology member Kirstie Alley, who has served as official spokesperson for the Scientology drug rehab Narconon since 1990.

Gregory Wisner attended Narconon in December 1997 at its location at the Chilocco Indian School located nearby Newkirk, Oklahoma, known as Narconon-Chilocco.
