Dora was born on February 6, 1946 in Trujillo, New Mexico to Benito and Cecilia García. Her grandparents, Simon and Elvira García, also helped raise her.
Dora graduated from Robertson High School in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
Dora worked many jobs in and around the Las Vegas, New Mexico area for many years including as an aide at the Paul D. Henry Elementary School and St. Anthony's Hospital.
Dora gave birth to her son, Anthony Gallegos in 1964.
Dora met Paul Chávez in 1980 and together, they set out on a lifetime companionship and love. Dora helped raise Paul's children and took care of him. They traveled together and worked in many vegetable gardens.
Dora loved to go camping, Spanish music and animals. Dora leaves behind her dog, Pepper.
Dora lived in Estancia, Truth or Consequences and in her family home of Bosque Farms, New Mexico. Dora brought calm, quiet strength and love to all who entered her life.
Dora was preceded in death by her parents, Benito and Cecilia García, grandparents, Simon and Elvira García, step-mother, Margaret Romero-García and two half-brothers, Johnny García and Francis García.
Dora is survived by Paul Chávez of Bosque Farms, NM, her children, Anthony Gallegos and his wife, Leanne of Centennial, CO, Lita Díaz of Estancia, NM, Paulina Scanland and her husband, Scott of Santa Fé, NM, Jeff Chávez and his wife, Melissa, Judy Chávez and John Chávez and his wife, Anika all of Albuquerque, New Mexico, grandson, Joseph Gallegos, special niece, Cecilia Larson of Las Vegas, NM who selflessly donated a kidney to Dora which helped her stay on this earth for an additional eight years, three sisters, Romie Trujillo of Longmont, CO, Virginia Ortiz of Las Vegas, New Mexico and Sylvia Larson of Las Vegas, NM, two-half sisters, Sandra Durán and Anna Jean García, both of Las Vegas, NM, brother, Benny García of Wichita, KS, her large extended family including her uncle, Ralph García of Pueblo, CO, aunts, Amelia Montaño and Victoria Gutiérrez both of Las Vegas, NM, Corina Gutiérrez of Pueblo, CO, and Rosarito Gutiérrez of Meeker, CO andnumerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Dora will be sorely missed but we are comforted that she is no longer in pain and is at peace.
Rosary services on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Las Vegas, NM. Funeral services on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father George V. Salazar as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery with the following serving as casket bearers, Scott Scanland, Chris Díaz, Isaac Ramírez, Paul Gómez, John Roybal, Oliver Sáiz, Paul M. Ortiz and Teresa Ortiz. Honorary bearers will be all her grandchildren. Dora will lie in state at the Rogers Chapel on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. where family and friends may call.
