She was born on May 25, 1885 to Harvey and Laura (Strickler)McFarland, in Newton County, Indiana. Both parents died when their five children were very young. The names of the children were Pearl, Ruby, Julia, and Jim as well as Minnie. Harvey's brother, Henry and his wife, Electra raised the children on the Grant McCarty Farm.

Minnie and George were married at the home of her sister, Julia and Charlie Lewis on April 26, 1908. Their daughter Rena was a toddler when the family moved to a farm near Emerado, North Dakota. In 1917 they returned to George's birthplace where they lived on his family farm for ten years before settling in their home in Ade.

Minnie was a busy farm wife and also enjoyed piecing quilts and made one for each of her nieces.

Minnie was survived by her husband George and their daughter Rena (Buswell) Key and one grandchild, Betty.

Minnie and George's daughter Rena was a local celebrity in Newton County as she was the first woman from there to pilot a plane and to fly solo; this was at the Purdue Airport in 1935-36. Rena later taught in Indianapolis Business College.

Rena had two more children, Jim and Patty.
