James Silas Guffey, son of Ephraim Monroe & Susan Elizabeth Willmon Guffey, was born in Jackson County, Alabama.

Jim married Louvena "Venie" Otinger, daughter of Loranza & Louisa Black Otinger, on December 8, 1912, in Section, Alabama (Jackson County). Jim & Venie became the parents of six children - Granville Curtis, William Arthur, Robert Freeman, Myrtle Nell, Melvin Bernard, and Linda Fay.

Jim and his family made the cross-country move to California circa 1938, settling in California in 1939.

Jim was a Free Holiness preacher and established the Abundant Life Center in Tracey, California, which he pastored for several years.

He passed away at age 97.
