Born in Milwaukee, she moved to Chicago with her parents Nelson and Charlotte Van Alstine Ludington as a girl and there she married Charles Barnes in 1868 in an elaborate wedding celebration. They had two children: Bertha and Nelson. She and her husband spent a great deal of time in Europe. Her daughter, Bertha Clinch-Smith, is also buried in this cemetery.
