John Waud was born in Doncaster, England, November 7, 1832. When he was a lad of 14 years his parents removed to America, settling in Ohio, where he grew to manhood. In 1850 he came to Oregon, took a homestead of 360 acres, embracing within its boundaries that beautiful spot now occupied by the Portland university, and within the present bounds of the city. Here he began to open up that home, which in after years should be known to so many for its boundless hospitality. In 1848 he was married to Miss Nancy Caples, daughter of the late Dr. William Caples. To them were born three sons and four daughters. The wife, two sons and one daughter have preceeded him to that "silent land." One son, Captain O. S. Waud, and three daughters, Mrs. P. W. Ross, Mrs. May T. Campion, of this city, and Mrs. J Johns of Victoria B.C. survive him.
To his wise advice and generous nature many owe a happy home today. From his door no needy man was ever turned away. Himself a man of position, views and profound convictions, he was broad enough to extend all the right he claimed for himself, to think and believe as he chose. Himself a man who thought no evil, he had unbounded confidence in his fellow-man. Himself a man of pure and noble impulses, he had a lofty confidence in the integrity and uprightness of his fellows.
