He was born August 13, 1921 in Grandin, Arkansas the son of Amos and Annie Mortimer Burgess. He first married Mildred Thompson. He then married Maxine Walker. She preceded him in death on December 18, 2004.
He was a longtime resident of Clark County, MO
Elmer was employed at Steel Castings in Keokuk, IA for 6 years and then at Foote Mineral in Keokuk, IA for 37 years before his retirement in 1982.
He enjoyed working in his garden, going fishing and deer hunting.
Elmer is survived by seven sons, Danny Burgess and his wife Linda, Elmer and his wife Carol, Howard Burgess and his wife Kathy, John Burgess and his wife Bobette all of Keokuk, IA, Elmer Ray Burgess, and Richard Burgess both of Alexandria, MO, and Charles Stroud and his wife Clara of the Quad Cities, three daughters, Sally Bennett, Annie Vermeesch and her husband Earl and Mary McGee and her husband Jackie all of Keokuk, IA, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and his first wife, Mildred Burgess of Keokuk, IA.
He was also preceded in death by six brothers, Edward, William, Glen, Albert, Cornelius and Howard Burgess and three sisters, Etta Kussman, Viola Richards,and Louise Carroll.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 18th, 2011 at the Frazee Cemetery in rural Alexandria, MO with Brother Bill Hauser officiating.
