Hillary Ann Holten died at age 21 per obituary due to complications of pneumonia and Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia.

She was a graduate of Creekview High School. Her pieces had been featured in the 2008 Young Masters Exhibition as part of her advanced placement education in the arts at Newman Smith High School.

Holten attended Brookhaven Community College in Dallas, Texas. Her intent had been to go on to study biology at the University of North Texas.

She was survived by both of her parents: Matthew Holten and Suzan Holten.

Holten was also survived by "Grandmother Carol Pervinsek, Aunt Mary Wright of Gainesville, GA, Aunt and Uncle Cathy and Jimmy Helms of Millegeville, GA, Uncle and Aunt Mike and Donna Holten of Spring, TX Aunt and Uncle Lucy and Steve Lee of Ft. Stockton, TX, Uncle Jerry Holten of Big Spring, TX. Cousins Blaise and H.L. Wright, Michele Holten, Luke Holten, Teresa and Mary Catherine Helms, Elaine Porter-wood, Leslie Hughes, Audrey and Anna Holten. She was preceded in death by her Maternal Grandfather, Robert Pervinsek, and Paternal Grandparents Joe and JoAnn Holten."

Her grandmother Carol JoAnn Koepke (nee Pervinsek) died July 9, 2012.

A memorial service was held at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Carrollton, Texas, on May 11, 2012.

She died while at Narconon Arrowhead in Oklahoma, a drug rehab affiliated with Narconon International with ties to Scientology. On August 23, 2012, her parents filed a lawsuit in Pittsburg County Court, Oklahoma, against Narconon of Oklahoma, Narconon International and the Association for Better Living and Education International (an organization established by Scientology).

According to FOX25 KOKH-TV, "Kaysie Werninck, Gabriel Graves, Hillary Holten and Stacy Murphy all died after checking into Narconon Arrowhead."

Her death at Narconon Arrowhead along with multiple other deaths at the facility prompted investigations by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, the Pittsburg County Sheriff's Office and the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
