Husband of Catherine/Katherine Smith Clayton.

NOTE: I found all this info online and I am posting it in hopes that we can finally get this Augustine Clayton who married Catherine/Katherine Smith straight.

1. A book "Microflimed Manuscripts Holdings Tenn State Library.. supposed to have a collection of genealogical data on 450 families in middle Tennessee.. the Clayton family is among them.
That's a long shot, but I'll contact the lady I've been emailing from the Polk Cty assoc and ask her how to requisition this to look at..
2. Another book entitled "Leaves from the Family Tree".. had a section on war records..
In that was a list of soldiers who received bounty land in Tennessee for their service in the War of 1812..
Elijah Clayton is listed.. receiving it in Polk county.. again.. I'll contact my lady in Polk and ask how to find out more about this..
3. Book entitled" Roster of Soldiers and Patriots of the American Revolution Buried in Tennessee 1974
John Clayton is listed, mentioning his wife Hannah and naming children.. it also has a DAR reference #.. anyone know how to use that?
4. Book entitled "South Carolina Newspapers The South Carolina Gazette 1760
It lists "lyttleton's Troops from 1760 and an Account of Balance Due to Capt. Lewis Golsan and his company under the command of Coll. John Chevillette
Here Lieut John Clayton is listed..
5. Book entitled "Names in South Carolina 1954-1965" (book of names of places.).
Here is a paragraph about Tyger River Baptist Church..
Head of Tyger River Church is located at Tigerville and is known as Tiger Baptist Church. It was organized in 1793. A presbytery consisting of Rev. Messrs. John Williams, Augustine Clayton, and Robert Smith on March 7, 1795, constituted them a church called Brushy Creek. It began as a branch of the Head of Tyger River Church and is located near Greenville."
6. Book entitled "South Carolina Deed Abstracts 1719-1772 Vol IV...
Here Capt. John Clayton, planter. of St. George Parish, Berkeley Co & Sarah his wife .. a tract on Cattles Creek, a branch of Edisto River..This John is on Augustine's side I believe.
7. In the DAR Lineage I only found one reference to a lady receiving membership for one of "our" Claytons..
The listing went as this:

Descendant of John Clayton, Jr., of New Jersey
Daughter of Elias C. Clayton and Maria Louisa Williams, his wife.
Granddaughter of John Clayton, Jr. and Sarah Smith, his wife.
Gr-granddaughter of John Clayton (b1722) and Hannah, his wife.
John Clayton ,Jr., (1764-1848), performed tours of duty and served as a substitute for his brother Asher. In 1832 his pension was allowed for two years actual service as private New Jersey Line. He was born in Freehold, where he died.
8. The Dar Patriot Index 1979 had the following:
A. Clayton, Augustine: b 3-4-1755 d aaft. 9-6-1834 m Catherine Smith Sol in SC received Pension
9. The DAR Patriot Index Centennial Edition 1990 had this:

My Augustine Sr. was originally
of Methodist preacher and music teacher and he and his wife Catherine (Katie)
or Christine Smith Clayton switched to the Baptist faith...removed to Ky where
he was first minister of Concord Baptist ch 1812...lived over mammonth
caves....thanks for listening....marge

Pious Reverend Austin Clayton, Minister(Spartanburg District (Now Spartanburg County), for 75 pounds SC Money sold 100 acres on S side of N FOrk of Tyger River. Borders: Andred Thomson and Samuel Miller, Esq., Part of 800 Acre grant from NC Govenor Robert Miller and due to Robert Miller's will sold to Robert Foster. (Tract "A" on Charles Miller's map which I have not seen.

NOTE: Rev. Augustine Clayton married Gowan Clayton, Jr and Francis Hunt/Lemmons.

March 8, 1785 Austine and wife Katherine Clayton (96th District, SC) sold land on Tygar River...part of a 300 acre grant dated Oct. 15, 1784 to Austine Clayton. Source: Spartanburg County, SC Deed Book "A", page 31, Book "A", page 33.

In 1785 Austin and Katherine Clayton to George Newman 200 acres on Tygar River. Source: Spartanburg County, SC Deeds Book "A", Book "A", page 33.

NOTE: "According to pension application Augustine move to Spartanburg 1776/1777, and his house burned New Years Day 1782/1783 when he and his wife were away. The above deeds just confirm that the proably were married by 1782, maybe much earlier. Augustine was 27 years old in 1782." Source: Marge.
