When Elizabeth Jane Sexton was born on October 10, 1920, in Rock Creek, South Dakota, her father, Harry, was 31, and her mother, Katherine, was 29. She married Fred LeRoy Burns on September 20, 1941, in Davison, South Dakota. She divorced and later married Mr. Swetnam. She had one child during her marriages. She died on December 31, 1993, in Sioux City, Iowa, at the age of 73, and was buried there.

The crime was considered both brutal and violent; Betty Swetnam had received numerous stab wounds, many of which were fatal. Investigators found the home had also been ransacked with drawers dumped out of dressers. Despite an exhaustive investigation, no viable suspects were developed and the case remains open.
