Sister Mary Buchmelter, age 96, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of
Christian Charity, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at Holy Family Convent,
Manitowoc.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2002, at
Holy Family Convent Chapel, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of
Christian Burial will be the Rev. Samuel D. Jadin, O.Praem with burial
at Holy Family Convent Cemetery, Manitowoc.
She was born Nov. 25, 1905, in Mingo Junction, Ohio, daughter of the
late John and Anna Margaret Rasko Buchmelter. She entered the convent in
1927 and professed her vows in 1930. Sister Mary earned a bachelor of
music degree from Chicago conservatory, Chicago, Ill. Sister Mary served
as an elementary teacher at St. Peter, Ashton; St. Michael, Whitelaw;
St. Mary, Brillion; St. Mary, Wakefield, Mich.; and as an organist and
teacher of music at St. Mary, Clarks Mills; St. Patrick, Maple Grove;
St. Augustine, Chilton; St. Andrew, Potosi; St. Mary, Reedsville; St.
Anthony, Neopit; St. Mary, Bloomington; St. Joseph & St. Philip, Green
Bay; St. Mary, Kaukauna; St. Francis de Sales, Manistique; St. Ambrose,
Ironwood, Mich.; SS. Peter & Paul, Wellston; St. Mary, Delaware, Ohio;
Guardian Angels, West Point, Neb.; and St. John, Wellsburg, W.V. After
her retirement from active ministry, she performed various services at
SS. Peter & Paul, Wellston, St. Benedict, Cambridge, Ohio; and Holy
Family Convent, Manitowoc. Since 1993, she has been a resident of St.
Rita Health Center at the Motherhouse. She is a member of the Franciscan
Sisters of Christian Charity.
Survivors include the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity; two
sisters and brothers-in-law, Agnes and Stephen Tancek, Mingo Junction,
Ohio; Theresa and John Galownia, Steubenville, Ohio; two sisters-in-law:
Vivian Buchmelter, Follansbee, W.V.; Margaret Buchmelter, Mingo
Junction, Ohio; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.
The family will greet relatives and friends at Holy Family Convent,
Manitowoc, from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday (TODAY) where a prayer service will
be held at 7 p.m. at Holy Family Convent Chapel.
The Pfeffer Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc, is
assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
