Served in Company D, 45th Virginia Infantry Regiment. 'The Minute Men'-Capt. Robert H. Gleaves. Wythe County men.

Lafayette enlisted in Co. D 45th VA Inf. Regt. 29 May 1861. He was struck by a shell fragment at the Battle of Piedmont and became disabled in the arm. After being captured at this battle 5 June 1864, he was transferred to Camp Morton in Indiana. Lafayette was exchanged on 4 March 1865. Source: Confederate Pension Record of Lafayette Pope.

The grave is now unmarked, but may have been marked with a fieldstone initially.
