Capt. Church died in Alabama in 1879. At that time, Memphis was in the midst of a Yellow Fever epidemic so his body was shipped to Nashville where it remained in a vault. In 1880, his body made its final journey from Nashville to Memphis where he was laid to rest. The funeral took place at 10 am Feb 10 1880 under the direction of the Masonic Brotherhood.
