James Emanuel Crook was last seen on or about March 1, 1917. He was staying at the Mecklenburg Hotel, room 426, in Charlotte, N.C. where he registered on Feb 27th. His effects were found in his room on March 7th when family members went to Charlotte to investigate his continued absence. The clerks at the hotel stated they thought he was round the hotel for a few days but he was suppose to return home on Feb. 28th according to a letter sent to his wife. He never even checked out.

James was a prominent lumberman & business man in the New London, Stanley County area. He had traveled with about 200$ cash so robbery may have been a motive for murder. The money was not listed as one of the items found in the room. It was not thought that he intentionally disappeared or that he committed suicide.

I am not sure if the case was ever solved or if he was ever found. I can find no death certificate and his wife was listed as widowed on the 1920 census. If you have more information please let me know.
