Charles Bland was born in Brigg, Lincolnshire in 1822, son of Charles and Rose Bland Radcliffe, brother of Dr John Netten Radcliffe. Charles the father was born in Andreas Isle of Man. The father was a Methodist minister in Yorkshire, England. Other siblings were Eleanor Quayle Radcliffe Ingham, Mary Phillipa Radcliffe, Thomas Matthew and William Thomas. Thomas and William died in infancy.
Charles married Mary Reese Urling 10 May 1851 in London England. Charles and Mary had no children but took in John Netten's children after their mother remarried and emigrated to the USA. Charlotte and Charles remained with Charles and Mary until Charles's death and with Mary until her death.
Excerpts from Charles obituary from the British Medical Journal " Charles was known as a great authority on nrevous disease. He was an author of many interesting disquisitions on questions of nerve force, especially in its electric relations, and on various problems in mental physiology outside the ordinary routine of medical practice. His friendships with intellects and theologians showed his varied interests and intellect. He was associated with Westminister and Queen's Square Hospital for Nervous Disease."
