Meadville, Pa., Sept. 3. - Major Charles F. Clyde, 64, one of the best known men in Meadville, died suddenly at 6:50 o'clock this morning at his home, 323 West College street, from an acute heart attack. While Major Clyde was not in robust health he had been about his duties as alderman as usual and conducted a hearing in his office Wednesday afternoon.

Major Clyde was born in Sandy Lake April 11, 1872, and came to this city as a youth. He was appointed a substitute carrier in the local postoffice in 1893 and was steadily advanced until he became assistant postmaster. He retired on October 1, 1933.

The deceased affiliated with the local National Guard as a young man and he served in the Spanish-American war, serving in the Philippines. He also served for a year in France in the World war. He was a member of the Walter Wilson camp of Spanish-American war veterans and also the local post of the American Legion.

Major Clyde is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Samuel Karons of Oil City, the Misses Mabel and Edith Clyde of Rochester, N. Y., and a brother, Herbert Clyde, also of Rochester. There is also a nephew, Eugene Clyde. Mrs. Clyde died several years ago.

Services in his memory will be conducted from the Byham funeral home, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
