Mrs. Dora Ella Westfelt Atkinson was born near Clarkrange, Tenn., May 31, 1902; she died at her home in the Clarkrange community on Thursday, September 21, 1961. She was the wife of Rev. John W. Atkinson, who had retired and built a home on his farm in the Clarkrange community.
Surviving are her husband, Rev. John W. Atkinson, three sons: Kenneth Jones and Billie Atkinson, of Gate City, Va., Tommy Buck of Knoxville; two daughters: Mrs. Betty Chunning of Fife, Va., and Brenda Atkinson, of Clarkrange, and Mrs. Atkinson's mother, Mrs. Herman C. Westfelt of Nashville.
Mrs. Atkinson was ill for many months, and for a lot of that time she was helpless, depending upon her husband and daughter to feed, bathe and clothe her. She was in the hospital for weeks, but spent her last few days at home, but unconscious of what was going on in her behalf.
She served with her husband for years in very difficult places.
Many times the salary was so low that her husband would have to supplement his salary by growing a crop or helping his members in the fields. Ella was a very industrious person when she was well and worked to can and store in the freezer sufficient food to tide them over during the year. She and Martha of the Bible had much in common in regard to keeping her house clean and attractive as possible.
The funeral service was held in Spring Chapel Methodist Church with Rev. Roy Cross and Rev. G. W. Atkinson officiating. The music was furnished by the local choir. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord; henceforth, they shall rest from their labors and their works do follow them."
