Frank and Agnes Kanzelberger Adam raised four sons (a fifth died in childbirth) and six daughters. Both parents were from Germany. They taught their children to love God and to strictly practice their Catholic faith as members od St. Luke Church, Two Rivers.
Ottilia, the ninth child in the family, was born on 14th December, 1901. Like her siblings before her, she attended the parish school. On 15th August, 1921, a few months before her 20th birthday, Ottilia entered Holy Family Convent. She was not alone as Mary, her 17 year old sister and the youngest in the family, had decided to enter with her. One wonders why these two young women joined the Franciscans when the only Sisters in Two Rivers were the "Agnesians". The answer: An older sister Barbara (Sister Fidelis), was a member of the Franciscan Community and was a source of inspiration to her sisters.
A year later, on 15th August, 1922, Ottilia Mary, and 26 other young woman were admitted to the novitiate. Ottilia was now Sister Fides and Mary received Sister Gerald for her religious name. Both sisters were very happy in their new life and were especially grateful to get to know Sister Fidelis a little better. (Sister Fidelis died on 12th December, 1929, at age 38).
Sister Fides received a Bachelors Degree from St. Norbert College, DePere, and served as a teacher in the Green Bay Diocese for 32 years. Her teaching experiences in the diocese include: St. Mary, Kaukauna; St. Mary, Reedsville; St. Therese, Appleton; St. Boniface, Manitowoc; St. John, Antigo; Guardian Angel, Oneida; St. Mary, Algoma, SS. Peter and Paul, Kiel; Sacred Heart, Oshkosh; St. Agnes, Green Bay;
St. Joseph, Sturgeon Bay; St. Anthony, Neopit, Wis. Schools outside of the diocese which benefitted from her expertise were: St. Francis de Sales, Manistique; St. Anne, Waukesha; St. Francis Xavier, Petoskey, Mich.; St. Joseph, Rice Lake; St. Joseph, Waukesha; St. Andrew, Potosi, Wis.; Sacred Heart, Ayrshire, Iowa.
From 1942-1943, Sister Fides was enrolled in Holy Family School of Nursing, Manitowoc. As a student nurse, she worked at the hospital but found that this was not her calling and thus concentrated her apostolic efforts to teaching.
In 1965, Sister Fides retired from active teaching and was missioned at St. Mary Ozanam Home, New Berlin, Wis. Since 1976, Sister Fides was at Holy Family Convent.
Sister Fides was a lover of music and an avid piano player.
