Israel Otterbein Enders was the 9th child of George Enders and Susannah Fetterhoff Enders. After the Civil War, Israel enlisted in the 6th U. S. Cavalry, serving from May 26, 1866 to March 7, 1869. He married Caroline Keiter and the couple had 13 children. Israel was a farmer and coal miner.

"Based on the obit for Israel O. Enders from Harrisburg Patriot, 11 Jun 1917, the 1890 Veterans’ Census, and the Pension Index Card from Fold3, Israel served in the 6th U.S. Cavalry, Company/Troop E after the Civil War. Technically, he wasn’t a Civil War soldier, although his pension was filed under the Civil War pension laws and I think he would have been eligible to join the G.A.R."
