He was the first student to attend Robert E. Lee Elementary School and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond. He graduated from the Naval Academy at the University of Virginia initiated during the Second World War. Mr. Abady was an executive naval officer 1st Lieutenant. Before going to the Pacific, he served on a destroyer in the Atlantic and in the African European Middle Eastern Campaign. Lt. (jg) Irving Samuel Abady, USNR, was a gunnery officer on the USS Badger DD126, the USS Elk IX 115 and the USS Chemong AO 30 in the Pacific. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal - 1 star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. After the war, he became president of Richmond Fixture and Equipment Company and co-founder of the Salvage Barn. He was a member of Beth-El Synagogue and a fundraiser for Israeli Bonds, president and one of the founders of Oak Hill Country Club and a member of Masonic Fraternal Lodge #53 for 64 years. He retired to Florida 30 years ago. Mr. Abady had a great sense of humor, liked to tell jokes and war stories. He was an ardent reader and polyglot. He will be remembered for his dedication to his business and the love of the South. The funeral service will be held in the chapel at Richmond Beth-El Cemetery at Forest Lawn, 4000 Pilot's Ln., Richmond, Va. on Thursday, August 12, 2010, at 9:30 a.m.
