His parents and siblings died in a fire and he and one brother were left orphans. He was one of the 'Boxcar Children' transported by the Children's Aid Society from orphanages in New York to the frontier where they worked and became fine citizens.

He arrived in Gibson City, IL to be met by Henry Hinrichs, with whose family he lived for a year. On 8 Sep 1905 he married Marie (Mary) O. Molck, a native of Sibley. They farmed Sibley Estate and other rented land until retiring in 1932, moving to Sibley to operate a produce business with his son, Marion.

They had five sons and a daughter. All were members of St. John's Lutheran church of Sibley.
