Reverend Benson grew up in West Tennessee and attended Pope High School near Jackson, TN, Union University, also in Jackson, and the Southern Baptist Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX. He pastored over ten churches in Texas, Tennessee, and Arizona during 45 years in the ministry, including Spring Hill Baptist Church and Poplar Grove Baptist Church, both near Trenton TN; Cundiff Baptist Church near Jacksboro TX; First Baptist Church of Rochester TX; First Baptist Church of Alamo, TN; Second Baptist Church of Union City, TN; Orangewood Baptist Church of Phoenix, AZ; First Baptist Church of Wortham, TX; and Ararat Baptist Church in the community of Huntersville, just east of Jackson, TN from 1972 to 1985. At the time of his death due to brain cancer, Rev. Benson was semi-retired and had been pastoring the Mountain View Southern Baptist Church of Dewey, AZ, near Prescott. He was survived by his wife Blanche, four children: Barbara Ann, Lt Col Robert Morris Benson, John L. Benson, and Anita Gail (Benson) Prater; one brother: Joe Neal Benson of Chattanooga TN; and one sister: Mary Nell Goodman of Carmichael CA.
