On Friday, August 5, 2011, just two months shy of 100 years of age, Dorothy Mae McDaniel Gaskin went home to her Lord and Savior. She was born in Wilfred, IN on October 9, 1911 to Ephraim McDaniel and Fern Halberstadt McDaniel. Dorothy's mother died in a fire in 1917 and she was raised by her father and step-mother, Era McDaniel. She married James Henry Gaskin in 1929 in Sullivan County. She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother, her husband; sons William Gaskin and wife Shirley Evans Gaskin, John M. Gaskin, and Paul Thomas Gaskin; a daughter, Mary Fern Stewart; granddaughter Paula Gaskin; grandson David Stewart; infant granddaughter Becky Jo Stewart; step-sister Ruth Vetter; and a half-brother, Oscar McDaniel. She is survived by a daughter Ruth Dalton (& husband Lloyd) of Clay City, a brother, Martin McDaniel of Dugger, IN, two daughters-in-law, Margie Fagg Gaskin of Chicago, IL, and Verna DeBaun Gaskin of Terre Haute. Other survivors include her grandchildren Jerry Gaskin (Diane), James Dalton (Linda), Jennifer Gaskin, Jeff Gaskin (Robin)—all of Terre Haute, Katherine Oakes of Indianapolis, Deborah Gentry of Farmersburg, Billie Jo Gaskin of Pimento, Pam Singer (Mark) of Eminence, IN, Jason Gaskin (Jill) of Lewis, Julie Coan (Jonathan) of Elmhurst, IL, Anne Nemschoff (Paul) of Wisconsin, and Doug Stewart of Tennessee, as well as 26 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was a member of Pimento United Methodist Church, where she taught many classes over the years for both adults and children. She also organized the first Vacation Bible School at the church many years ago. She was an active member of the Linton Township Extension Homemakers Club for many years, W.W. II War Mothers, and had volunteered at Regional Hospital. Dorothy lived her life in service to God, her family, and others. She was a good neighbor, a good Christian, and a good example for her family. Her funeral can't be anything other than a celebration of a life well lived. Funeral services will be held at DeBaun Springhill Chapel on Monday, August 8, 2011 at 10:30 AM, with Pastor Ed Gladish and Pastor Tim Voll officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Clay City. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, August 7, 2011 from 2:00 – 6:00 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Pimento United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 55, Pimento, IN 47866, in her memory.
