McALLEN - Angela F. Canales passed away Monday, September 24, 2012. She was 84. She was born Angela Flores in Mission on Feb. 10, 1928.

The youngest of eleven brothers and sisters. Everyone went to school in Mission. The value of a good education was learned and lifelong friends were made. They would gather to talk and laugh. To her friends she was known as "Golie". Golie was everyone's friend and played the piano in the Methodist church on a regular basis. Angela graduated early from Mission High and attended the St. Louis Institute of Music for one year before transferring to the University of Texas in Austin. At UT she met and married Horacio "Lacho" Canales from Benavides, Texas. He was finishing a Bachelor's degree in business and entering UT law school. They had two children, Lorella (John) and Ireneo, who everyone called "Neo". After graduating with a degree in music education Angela worked for the state of Texas as a juvenile probation officer.

Upon her husband's graduation from law school the family moved to Benavides until Lacho's untimely death in 1960. At that time Angela moved to McAllen where her family had built a home. While in Benavides Angela had been a classroom teacher in the nearby Rialitos community. She resumed teaching in McAllen retiring after 30 years. McAllen established a normal life for her. Raising the two children. Getting involved with church. Having people over to the house where she would play the piano. The value of her good education stayed with her. She earned her Master's of Education while working as a teacher by taking classes whenever time would allow. Her career included running the parental involvement program for McAllen ISD. Formally she was Angela, but people called her Angie. For her lifelong friends she was and will ever be, Golie. The value of those friends stayed with her. They would still gather to talk and laugh.

She is survived by her daughter Lorella Martin (John); her son Neo Canales (Dixie); granddaughter Audrey Lindholm (Leonard); grandson Patrick Fitzgerald (Ursula) and three great grandchildren.

Service was at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012 at Kreidler Funeral Home. Burial in Benavides, TX.
